Adventures of a College Sophomore
There has been so much going on in these first few weeks of school. There are so many activities to go to and so many new people, it took me a while to settle in and come to the reality that I was really here. I am finally a college freshman. Wow! What an amazing feeling, I have to admit that I was enjoying the freedom I have gotten. Classes have been going really well, I am getting to know so many more people and I love how much I am learning. I have had to get used to the study habits of college. It is a lot different from high school, I hardly ever studied in high school, but it feels like its all worth it. Everything has come to me and I am now realizing how much of an adult I really am. Its not just a dorm room, its mine and I now have to make sure, I eat and get enough sleep and there is no one there to wake me up if I forget my alarm, I really miss my mom waking me up in the morning, now its just an annoying buzz. Going home even seemed like a new experience.
Going home for the first time after moving in was akward, but very nice. I don't want to say that I was homesick, as much as curious. I wondered how my family had truly adjusted to me not being at home. Of course I knew they missed me, even my brother, who likes to pretend that he doesn't. My mom was so anxious for me to get home she made the entire family wait to go out to dinner. I think on the drive home was when I realized that this had been the longest I had ever been away from my family. I had went on little trips or track meets and been gone for a few days, but not weeks. My dad called me two days ahead of time to see what I wanted him to make me for breakfast on saturday morning. Inside I was laughing at how cliche my parents were being. They missed me so much, but they didn't want to admit it and when they knew I was coming they wanted everything to be absolutely perfect.
I had an amazing weekend, it was filled with seeing everyone and shopping with my mom, something we haven't done in a while. I got to go back and meet up with my friends and we all shared stories about our first couple of weeks. It seemed weird at first, but it felt like this was how it was supposed to be. Unfortunately I found out that a close family friend had been diagnosed with cancer while I was gone, which has been something I have worried about since I found out. She has two young children and I have babysat for her since the children were born. Seeing how sick she was, made me appreciate, my life and having my mom there. I know a lot of people who lost their mom's at a young age, but I was lucky. It also made me think about my career, I am going into the medical field not only because I like people, but because I love to help people even more. Just knowing that one day I could be the one to help someone like her get better has made me so much more excited to learn and drive toward my ultimate goal. Naturally, I thought about all this on a long run back home, which was fabulous. Leaving home was felt so natural, of course my car was loaded with lots of clean clothes and food, because trust me I eat a lot. My mom made it a point to let me know how much the grocery bill decreased since I have been gone. They still love me though. Now I am back at school again, with even more to do.
