Adventures of a College Sophomore

An Exciting Opportunity

My neighbor and I were hanging out and she mentioned a program called Camp Adventure. Once I heard all about it I knew I had to do it.

One night I just decided to hang out in the dorms and have a good time. Heather and I were watching movies and she told me that she was going to this meeting for Camp Adventure. I had heard of the program, and I thought it was interesting, but wasn't really sure about it. She asked me if I wanted to go with her the next day and see what it was all about. I decided to go and once I got there I knew i had to go. Camp Adventure is program, where students are sent out to various military bases all over the country and world, to lead programs for the children on those bases to attend during the summer days. The meeting was interview styled and we were split into groups and asked about our expericnces with kids and to try and teach a song and game to the group. We were then let out for lunch and told when we got back whether or not we were accepted into the program. I was so nervous when I went to lunch, but I was excited about it all at the same time. When i got back i found out I was excited and all I could think about was where I was going to go and how much of a great opprotunity I was being given.

I decided that rather then be just a regular leader I was going to do lifeguarding. I have never really swam laps, but i knew if I wanted to go and do this I would do whatever i could to achieve my goal. They gave us choices on where we wanted to go, and told us to number them. So I chose Germany as my first choice and Italy and Hawaii as my second and third choices. Now it was up to me to call my mom and dad and say "Hey, I'm want to do this what do you think?" I had never even mentioned anything to my parents before, I didn't really have time. It all happened in less then 24 hours. So I explained it to my mom and she just said well, we will talk to your dad and go from there. I immediately thought okay, its on the boarderline, but they will be helping me pay for it, because I'm not working. Of course my dad had to over-hear my mom talking and wanted me to explain it. So I explained it to him and he said well, you bring the paper work home and we'll look at it.

Then he asked how long I would be gone, and then,...I told him 10 weeks...he paused and then said, "You're gonna be gone all summer too..." I knew that they missed me and were worried. Especially after my dad said that. This weekend I have to go home and "sell" the idea to my parents. I really hope they let me go this summer..if not I am sure I will go the following summer. (I really hope I get to go this summer though!!!)
