March 22, 2009Workouts and KTVsPosted by KellyWell, it’s been a pretty easy-going week. On Friday one of my colleagues, Eric, returned from his business trip to Shanghai. It’s a tradition to bring back gifts for your coworkers. So, I received a jar of hawthorns. I am really grateful for the gift, but I didn’t really know what to do with hawthorns. I found some recipes with help from google, but Evian suggested that I eat them plain. I’ll have to try them this week. Last week was my first week at the gym. It was really busy, but nice. I managed to figure out the Chinese tread mill, and I’m starting to get the hang of the metric system. I usually stick to my slow jog so I think it’s funny when some of the Chinese guys choose the tread mill next to mine and keep looking at my time/speed and try to “one-up” me. (And I’m usually at a slow pace so this isn’t hard to do.) If it makes them feel better that they can run faster than an out-of-shape foreigner, that’s fine by me! :) After my spinning lesson I ran into a slight problem… I found out the hard way that the buses stop at 8pm. Well, I took the wrong bus, got dropped off in the middle of no where, and I had forgotten to take the card with my address, so I couldn’t even tell any taxi where to go. Luckily my friend Joanna was able to help direct the taxi via my cell phone. This experience was a motivator to learn the language! Saturday was the first morning I was able to sleep in! That must mean I’m finally adjusted to the time change. I had a nice relaxing morning of doing nothing. In the afternoon I met up with Joanna and her best friend, Ann. We ate a delicious lunch and chatted away. I learned some interesting things about life in China. Joanna and Ann described their dormitory and I think all UNI students would feel spoiled with their dorms after hearing their experience! Joanna and Ann share a very, very small room with a total of girls. Then on each floor (usually 120 girls) they have to share only 10 bathrooms/showers. Ten showers for over 120 girls??? I was shocked! But then I was more shocked to find out that they have to pay to use the shower or bathroom! 5RMB! That’s almost $0.80 every time you have to use the bathroom or shower. After we finished up eating I noticed that the lady behind the counter had her dog with her. She also took a nap during our meal, which I thought was a little strange. And then there was a couple with a small toddler, and I saw my first baby dressed in an outfit with no butt! Diapers are expensive and take up a lot of space, so they make the outfits without any bottom fabric. I wondered how that all worked, but I decided I’d ask another time. The next day was windy. 40MPH gusts just about blew me off my feet! I did manage to make it to English lessons with Chen, wander the mall area, and forced myself to hit the gym. Two girls on roller skates stopped to talk to me. Their English was very good, but they seemed embarrassed. Also, in the Elevator at the gym someone said that I was beautiful! This was after my workout, so I’m pretty sure they didn’t have their glasses on. The thought was sweet though! It was too windy to do anything else so I spent the rest of the day curled up in my apartment watching TV shows and movies. (I’m now a fan of the movie, Twilight.) This week I plan on going to more spinning classes, even if it kills me! Next weekend I think I’ll venture downtown again to explore more of the city, weather permitting. Hopefully some of the hot spring weather gets here soon! |
