Time for Change

Why do we start off the new year about 10 days after the beginning of winter? This is all wrong. Spring is the season for new beginnings and for fresh starts. We should usher in the new year on the first day of spring. I propose that we readjust our calendars. Let's have January 1 start on the vernal equinox (which is usually March 20th on our current messed up calendar). Then those of us north of the equator would begin the year with the delightful promise of new life.

If you really want to get crazy consider this. Why do we have 7 months that have 31 days, 4 months that have 30 days, and one month that can’t figure out if it should have 28 or 29 days? Yes, I know that we have to add an extra day every four years to keep our calendars in line with the earth’s journey around the sun. But we don’t need to make the lengths of the months so illogical, and the extra day doesn’t have to fall in February. How about we make January 30 days and February 31 days, and March 30 days and so on. However, the month of December would be 30 days for three years, and on leap years it would be 31 days. Click here for the comparison.

Think about the benefits this new calendar would bring. First it would be more logical as it would have 30 days alternating with 31 days in a regular pattern. Second, since the added day for leap year would fall on the last day of the year it would not affect the first day of spring. It would always be the same--January 1. (Remember that we are moving January first to what is now March 20th, the first day of spring.) Third, and perhaps most importantly, you would no longer need to tap on your knuckles to figure out how many days the month has. Imagine the skin cells we'll save!
