Save the Celebration
So this weekend has provided us a great deal of football entertainment. And while I'm watching a game I notice a couple defensive players make a tackle on a running back. Right after the tackle these guys are jumping around, pounding each other--celebrating. You've seen it before... The funny thing is, it wasn't even a third down play. In fact, the very next play the QB makes a long pass to the corner of the end zone for a touchdown. And I'm thinking to myself, "I wonder who's celebrating now?"
And it hits me. If players were smart they wouldn't celebrate every play they do something right. Rarely is a game won on a single play. Think about it. It's like a golfer freaking out and dancing around because their first shot off the tee made it onto the fairway. That's great but it doesn't mean much 'til the ball is in the hole. Moreover, I wonder how much energy is used up by players who run around celebrating after every play. Seems to me they are just going to tire themselves out before the end of the game. Seriously, I wonder if players would have more energy for the game if they didn't show off so much.
Now don't get me wrong. I'm not suggesting that players act like indifferent robots. I just think it's a bit silly to celebrate doing something you are expected to do. Let's save the celebration for the big plays.
On the other hand, maybe we should bring this concept into the office setting. Hey look at me, I just made some photocopies for class. After my little jig somebody needs to slap me on the butt and bang their head against mine. On second thought, I think I'll take the QB's approach and pass on that one.
