Cultural Encounters:
From the Sand to the Snow

July 6, 2006

Holiday!

The holiday was coming and the most difficult thing for me to do was decide where and how I would spend the 4th of July. My sisters and I were brainstorming and lot of locations came to mind, like Chicago, Minneapolis and Des Monies. The main goal was to have a good time and not spend too much money. We finally came to a conclusion that we would go to Minneapolis. A few minutes later Larissa remembered she was leaving next weekend from Minneapolis, meaning we would have to take her to there and going twice to the same place is not the ideal vacation. Time passed by and the 4th of July was coming, and we just could not make up our minds on where to go. Carlos, a very good friend of mine, called us to say Mrs. Martha, which I met 2 years ago through Carlos, was inviting my sisters and I to go to her house and barbecue.

When we arrived there all of her guests spoke Spanish. I don’t know their nationality, but it was amazing to see how these foreigners got together to celebrate America’s Independence Day. I was really surprised and amazed. As any Latin party, we ended up watching the World Cup match, Germany and Italy. Even though Brazil is out, and I do not want to hear about it, I had a good time watching soccer. It felt like home during Soccer World Cup.

Sometimes things do not work as we planned, and we have the tendency to take to the negative side. Even though I did not travel as I originally planned, I ended up meeting with a friend who I have not seen in 2 years. We used to play table tennis together when I arrived here, but we lost contact when I ended up moving out from the dorms. He was one of Mrs. Martha’s guests and he told me about Iowa Games which is held twice a year, summer and winter - www.iowagames.org. The summer games are going to be held in Ames and the table tennis contest is July 15th. When I arrived home I went online and registered for it. Wish me good luck!

My holiday was not how I planned but it turned out even better than I expected.
