Cultural Encounters:
From the Sand to the Snow
Today was the last day of Summer Orientation Staff. It has passed by so fast that it is hard to believe it’s over. I was really nervous when I started this job, wondering if I would get along with the other students. I ended up making friends that will last a lifetime. I have learned a lot of things about American culture as well.
It is hard to say good-bye, I grew up saying this all the time due to my father’s career, but even now it isn’t easy for me. I know that they will be around next fall, but the likelihood of all of us being together again is slim.
Once the orientation session was over, we decided to meet at “The Other Place” for the last time. We took individual pictures, exchanged frames with our group picture and talked about what each of us will do for the rest of the summer.
I had a wonderful time this summer and I will miss them.

From Brazil to Iowa Claudia is a senior majoring in both Public Relations and Economics. Two of her sisters have joined her at UNI. Claudia works in the International Services Office, and also was an active officer in International Student Association and intramural sports. She loves horseback riding, table tennis and cheering for the Panthers.
