Cultural Encounters:
From the Sand to the Snow

The Paradise

Last week I had the opportunity to go to Greece.

I went to the largest Dodecanese island called Rhodos (or Rhodes) in the Aegean Sea. The island is really close to the west Turkey shore. The capital city is also called Rhodes and it is the major economic, commercial, tourist and cultural center of the Aegean Sea. The island is very famous for the Colossus of Rhodes, one of the Seven Wonders of the World.

A giant statue of the Greek god Helios, roughly the same size as today's Statue of Liberty in New York, stood for only fifty-six years until Rhodes was hit by an earthquake. Later on, the pieces were sold to a traveling salesman from Edessa.

In the city of Rhodes, known as the old city, a medieval castle was built in the middle of the town. The castle was turned into a museum, nowadays there are shops and restaurants surrounding the castle boundaries. I also had the opportunity to go to Lindos.

The high fortified area of an ancient Greek city, Acropolis offers a beautiful view to the harbor and the coastlines. I have never seen something so amazing as I did when I went to the top of the mountain. It feels like you are in paradise. The water here is so clear that you can literally see the toes of your feet. The beaches in Rhodes are mainly made of rocks and a bit of sand. On one side of the island the water is very calm but on the other side it is completely different; there are high waves which are perfect for surfing. I stayed in Olympia in a 3 star hotel. It was very nice and clean. Things in this place were very cheap and I really could not believe it, but if you go to the capital or other places that can get really expensive. In Rhodes there are a lot of places that you can rent a car or a motorbike.

Actually, the majority of the tourists rent vehicles to go to different places on the island. To rent a motorbike for 6 days, it is around 50 euros. Rhodes is not a party place. The majority of tourists that visit Rhodes are mainly couples, families and generally people looking for a relaxing time. If you are looking for a party place and young people, I would definitely say go to Palma de Mallorca, Spain or Lignano in Italy.
I had a great time in Rhodes and I plan to go back, but the next time I also want to go to Kos, another Greek island.
