2/8/2008 Email, MyUNIverse, WebCT, & ResQPortal Outage for maintenance starting at 11:59pm Friday evening

Email, MyUNIverse, WebCT, & ResQPortal will be unavailable starting at 11:59pm Friday evening, February 8, 2008, for up to two hours for system maintenance.

The following systems and their associated applications will be impacted:


  • UNI Collaboration Suite (Email, all CatID authentication)
  • MyUNIverse
  • WebCT
  • ResQ Portal

March 6, 2008

3/16/2008 Major System Outage Planned

Due to system maintenance scheduled for Saturday, March 15, MyUNIverse and HEAT will be unavailable from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The following systems will be unavailable from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m., Sunday, March 16: e-mail (mail will still be received), MyUNIverseCT (formerly WebCT), MyUNIverse, MEMFIS, and many other smaller distributed systems.

In order to adjust our SAN (Storage Area Network) to support the new imaging project we have scheduled the following maintenance to occur Sunday, March 16 from 7am - 1pm.

3/16/2008 Major System Outage Planned

Due to system maintenance scheduled for Saturday, March 15, MyUNIverse and HEAT will be unavailable from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The following systems will be unavailable from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m., Sunday, March 16: e-mail (mail will still be received), MyUNIverseCT (formerly WebCT), MyUNIverse, MEMFIS, and many other smaller distributed systems.

The production database WEBP will be unavailable on Saturday, March 15th beginning at 8:00am through 5:00pm. The outage is necessary to upgrade the Oracle database to version 10.2.0.3. This outage will impact the following applications:

My UNIverse
HEAT
AD_ASTRA
Residence applications
BALANCE
UNI ID card system
LIB_PROD systems
ASCC

These databases work with the following applications: Ad Astra, Balance, Equitrac, Heat, Library and the My Universe applications.

The upgrade will take approximately 6-8 hours to complete. Please let me know if you have questions about the upgrade or the proposed dates for the upgrades.

7/12/2008 Email, MyUNIverse, MEMFIS, & WebCT Outage on Saturday

ITS will be applying operating system patches beginning at 6am on Saturday July 12, 2008. Maintenance is expected to be complete by 10am.

8/2/2008 PLANNED ELECTRICAL SHUT DOWN - CURRIS BUSINESS BUILDING

The Facility Services message below explains that the electricity will be shut off in the Curris Business Building August 2, 2008. In preparation, Email, WebCT, and MyUNIverse will be shut down at 5:30 a.m. and all computer systems in the computer room in Curris will be shut down at 6:30 a.m. This includes the mainframe (QWS3270/IBM Mainframe) application transactions (SI12, SI70, etc.) include Cashiering, Admissions, Accounts Receivable, Financial Aid, Registrar's, Public Safety, Residence, and all Web services for registering, instant transcripts, degree audits, parking permits, etc. Campus access to the internet will be maintained during this outage.

The systems will come back online once power becomes available and we expect all the various systems to become available by mid-afternoon.

10/9/2008 ITS Central Server Outages

ITS is scheduled to have two racks of computer application servers offline early Thursday morning as electricians complete work on the power distribution system within the central ITS computer room. Downtime window is between 6am and 8am on Thursday, though actual downtime is anticipated to be less than two hours. We’re optimistic we could be back online by 6:30am assuming no problems are encountered.

Affected systems include (but are not limited to):

  • ITS Central File Server (Megatron)
  • VMWare Server (Ironhide) containing:
    • Printing server (Jazz)
    • Antivirus server (ITS-NAV)
    • Others
  • Calendar server (calendar.uni.edu)
  • Microsoft updates server (WSUS)
  • ITS User Services Supported Users Backup Server

11/29/2008 Major Computer System Outage Saturday

There will be a planned power outage in the Curris Business Building on Saturday, November 29, 2008, beginning midnight Friday and continuing until 8:00a.m. Saturday morning for phase II improvements to the Curris Data Center infrastructure. Prior to the loss of electrical power, systems will be shutdown in an orderly fashion beginning as early at 9:00p.m., Friday night.

This outage will affect only the Curris Data Center. All of the Services housed in the Curris Data Center including Email, MEMFIS, WebCT, MyUNIverse, ITS File & Print services, SIS applications and wireless internet connections will be unavailable during this time frame.

Additionally, applications for A&F, Marketing & Public Relations, CNS, ESS, DOR, and Advancement not specifically mentioned will be affected as well.

Campus access to the internet will be maintained during this outage.

During this time all services will be unavailable. Services will return once maintenance is complete - this may be earlier than the 8:00a.m. deadline.

12/7/2008 Major Computer System Outage Sunday

IBM will be applying hardware maintenance on the mainframe CPU December 7 from 10:00 a.m. to approximately 1:00 p.m. The IBM mainframe (QWS3270) application transactions (SI12, SI70, RS04, SI19, CVBH, etc.) which would include Cashiering, Admissions, Accounts Receivable, Financial Aid, Registrar's, Public Safety, Residence, and all Web services for registering, instant transcripts, degree audits, parking permits, etc. will be affected by the outage.

Barb Charley will notify all IBM mainframe users by e-mail when the mainframe system is available after the above outages.

12/27/2008 Major Computer System Outage, All CatID Systems (Email, etc.)

The Collaboration Suite team needs an estimated eight hour maintenance window to perform a database upgrade and increase space for email recovery, there will be an outage on Saturday, December 27, 2008 from 12:01 AM to 8:00 AM. This outage will affect *all* applications authenticating with CatID including E-Mail, MyUNIverse, eLearning (WebCT) and mainframe QWS3270 transactions.

All mainframe (QWS3270) application transactions (SI12, SI70, RS04, CVBH, SI19, etc), which includes Cashiering, Admissions, Accounts Receivable, Financial Aid, Registrar's, Public Safety, Residence and all Web services for registering, instant transcripts, degree audits, parking permits, etc.

1/23/2009 Brief Network Outages – Friday and Sunday Mornings

This week there are two planned Internet outages due to network maintenance. The maintenance work is intended to resolve a problem with network statistics reporting.

The first outage is scheduled for Friday, January 23rd, from 6:00-6:20 am. If necessary, there will be a second longer outage on Sunday, January 25th, from 6:00-7:00 am.

These outages will disrupt *all* off-campus Internet access and services provided including UNI email system, web sites, eLearning (WebCT), MEMFIS, etc.

On-campus use of these UNI services will continue to function normally and all email will be delivered.

6/13/2009 POSTPONED Major Central Database Server Outage, Saturday, June 13, 7am - 4pm

ITS will be moving production databases to new equipment beginning at 7:00 AM on Saturday June 13, 2009. This maintenance is expected to be complete by 3:00-4:00 PM. An email will be sent out once the database is available.

The following systems and services will be unavailable during the maintenance window:


  • MyUniverse
  • Student Web Registration (ResQPortal)
  • Student Registration (Mainframe)
  • COD XML System - Financial Aid back office
  • ResNet Registration
  • Phone Book (all J2EE applications)
  • Heat - Help desk
  • Some Library systems which utilize Oracle
  • CardID system (system for printing UNI ID cards)
During the outage, a temporary MyUNIverse home page will allow the campus community to access resources normally accessed via MyUNIverse. For example, links to the following will be there:

  • WebCT
  • MEMFIS
  • CatID Reset

Due to hardware changes related to preparing for the new student system, all Oracle-based systems will be down Saturday 07/25/2009 from 7AM - 10AM. Email will be down from 3AM to 10AM rather than beginning at 5AM as previously announced.

8/10/2009 Emergency Restart of Production Database

Due to a bug in the file system our production database server must be restarted to get the production portal database back. This is going to be done at 3:30pm today. This will impact MEMFIS, WebCT, MyUNIverse, and web based reporting.

All databases are expected to be back by 4pm. A follow up email will be sent when this has been taken care of.

The root cause of this issue is the power outage in Gilchrist Hall over the weekend.

We are actively working with Sun on a permanent fix for this issue.

8/10/2009 Databases are up

All impacted databases are now up and their corresponding web/application servers can now be restarted.

To address performance issues, tonight at 11PM, we will be restarting the OAS that hosts the Access java applications. This normally happens daily at 5:05AM.

02/01/2010 - Unplanned IBM Mainframe Outage

The UNI mainframe (student records and related applications) is
currently down. It appears as if it may be a hardware issue requiring a
service call and parts. If that is the case, it will be down for
several hours. Additional information will be provided as it becomes
available.

June 17, 2010

06/19/2010 - Electrical Outage Awareness Notice

A power outage is scheduled for Saturday, June 19th, between 7:00 AM and 12 Noon for the Curris Business Building.

This outage should not affect the ITS data center as the standby generator is expected to handle the data center load during this power outage.

July 19, 2010

7/20/2010 - Power Outage in CBB 19/21

Normal power is scheduled to be turned off in CBB 19/21 to allow the data center housed there to be added to the campus metering project. The standby generator will pick up the load during this time. No outage is expected.

The contractor is to perform this work on Tuesday, July 20, 2010 between 8AM
and 9AM.

08/05/2010 - CatID Authentication Outage

As of 5:50 AM, there was an outage of the Central Authentication Service (CAS), the method of authentication used for CatID access to MyUNIverse, eLearning and other applications. ITS is looking into the issue now.

08/05/2010 - CatID Authentication Working

The Central Authentication Service (CAS) is back online as of 7:30, 5 Aug 2010, and CatID authentication is working again. The changes made this morning to the secure socket layer (SSL) certificate have been rolled back.
