ITS Communications Corner Announcements

There will be a maintenance window regarding fiber optic cabling which will impact UNI voice telecommunications service in ROTH, Family Housing in that vicinity, and University Apartments offices.

This maintenance window will occur Tuesday, March 18th, between 5:00 AM and 6:30 AM.

During a change in fiber pairs within this maintenance window, there will be no UNI voice telecommunications service at the above locations. Plans are in place to re-establish voice telecommunications service as soon as possible after the fiber pairs change.

This maintenance window will NOT impact Qwest or McLeodUSA (PAETEC) service Family Housing residents may have in their residences.

There will be a maintenance window from 6:00 AM to 7:00 AM Wednesday, October 15th, for the voice mail/auto attendant aspect of the UNI telecommunications system.

The maintenance work is such that it should NOT be service-affecting; however an outage during the window is possible.

If service is impacted, it would affect receipt/placement of voice mail messages and auto attendant activity (Press 1 for x; Press 2 for y; etc.)

To enable electrical upgrades in the Gilchrist Hall telecommunications switch room, we have scheduled a maintenance window for Saturday, October 18, 2008 from 6:00 AM to 8:00 AM.

During this early morning maintenance window we anticipate a total voice system outage lasting less than one hour. No calls will be received or may be placed on the UNI telecommunication system during the outage, voice messaging will not be in service, and auto attendants and call center systems will not be in operation (no "Press 1, 2, or 3 for X;
no calls queued with music-on-hold for departments, ticketing, etc).

Students, faculty, staff, and visitors who are on campus should utilize cell phones, email, texting, etc., for general communications during this outage. UNI staff utilizing the campus 800 Mhz Radio system can continue to use them during this outage, although the telephone access feature will not be available.

FOR EMERGENCIES: Cell phones should be used to dial 911, or you can call UNI Public Safety at 273-4000 or 273-2712.

An email will be sent to the ITS-ANNOUNCE mail list when the maintenance window has been completed.

There will be a voice telecommunications maintenance window for specific buildings on the UNI campus Friday, January 23rd, between 6:30 AM – 7:00 AM.

A switch-node component must be changed-out, causing a brief voice extension outage, expected to be 5 – 10 minutes.

There will be a maintenance window for the voice messaging/auto attendant portion of the voice telecommunications system, on Thursday, March 19th, between 6:00 and 7:00 AM.

For a short time during the maintenance window as the system is rebooted, voice mail and auto attendants (Press 1 for x, Press 2 for Y, Press 3 to leave a message for Z, etc.) will be inoperable. However, all other voice calling attributes of the telecommunications system will continue to operate throughout the maintenance window.

A 400-pair cable was cut in a construction zone this morning, causing a voice telecommunications outage for the following buildings:

CAC
KAB
SWT
H-32

Incoming calls to extensions in the buildings impacted will go to their respective voice mail boxes.

Incoming calls to Auto Attendants will work (Press 1 for this; Press 2 for that, Press 3 to speak with so-and-so); calls to information voice mailboxes in the attendants will work, and selections to individual extensions will go to the respective voice mailboxes.

Outgoing calls from extensions in the impacted buildings will not work (no dial tone).

We do not currently have an estimate on time-to-repair…….

As of 2:45 PM, a cable repair crew was on the scene of the cable cut.

The estimated repair window is 3 hours.

As each cable pair is repaired, telephone service to the extension on that pair should be restored.

HOWEVER:

• Some digital telephones may not come-up on their own. If so, unplug & plug-in telephone set. If it does not come back at all, please call 35555 and report the problem.
  
• For digital display telephones, there may be a request on the display to reset the speakerphone. To do so, press the button directly under the word “Begin” in the display.

There will be a maintenance window for the campus voice telecommunications system on Thursday, June 25th, from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM.

We anticipate a total voice system outage lasting less than two hours.

Due to the Physical Plant scheduled emergency electrical outage scheduled for LANG Hall on Tuesday, August 11th, from 8:00 AM until noon, we wanted to announce the "potential" for a UNI voice telecommunications system outage during that time, which would impact the following buildings:
