March 19, 2007Quiet and Group Study Areas
While everyone was away on Spring Break, Rod Library staff were busy making changes to our study areas.
In response to student and faculty requests for more group study areas and dedicated quiet areas, we have created such spaces all around the building. We will be posting maps at our front entrance and you may also view them online. Pick up a brochure at a service desk to take with you too.
Here is a quick summary:
Group study areas have been arranged in locations on the first, second, and third floors. You will find the greatest change in furniture arrangement in the main study area on the west side of second floor.
Quiet areas include the entire fourth floor and the east lounge on the third floor.
We welcome your comments on these changes!

This comment is in response to Mike's concerns about the library becoming a second union.
More and more university students, here and at other schools, are finding they need a semi-quiet location for collaborative work on assignments and projects. We have received many comments and requests to create these group spaces, as well as to create quiet areas in the building.
Although only the fourth floor and third floor east lounge have been designated as quiet areas, these are not the only locations where individuals may work in peace and quiet. Scattered over the first, second, and third floors are areas that have not been designated quiet or group areas. These spots remain the same as they were previously. If you have trouble finding a quiet place to study in the building, please stop at the Circulation Desk. We have maps that show the quiet areas and our staff would be happy to give you some suggestions on where you may find a quiet spot.
We will continue to assess the library’s spaces and will make changes in response to the needs of our users. Please continue to send us comments! Your feedback will help us better plan our space.

Why not just turn the library into a second union? I thought the library was supposed to be a *quiet* place to study and now over half of it has been designated a group study area. Something isn't right about the fact that if I want a quiet place to study I have to get a group study room to myself.

Final you answered our requests, but now we'll see if ppl actually stick to the rules. I find it very hard to find a quiet place to study in the buildings that i go to on campus. I hope these changes help. Thank You.

I am really excited to see that you added quiet areas to the library. I am excited to check them out, and I really appreciate the addition!
