May 21, 2007New Library Databases
Rod Library has recently acquired three new databases: The New York Times, 1851-2003 (ProQuest Historical Newspapers), Books in Print.com Professional, and CQ Global Researcher. Each of these databases is accessible from the Databases A-Z menu that appears under the Journal and Magazine Articles (Panther Prowler) heading on the Library home page and through UNISTAR, the Library’s online catalog.
ProQuest’s Historic New York Times provides cover-to-cover access to full page and article images from 1851 – 2003. Content includes photos, maps, graphics, obituaries, political cartoons, editorials, and both classified and display advertising. Search options include keyword, author, specific date and date ranges, document type, and more. Users may print pages and articles as PDF documents. Purchase of this database was funded in part through a special allocation of Student Computer Fees.
Books in Print.com Professional provides access to bibliographic information for more than 5 million in-print, out-of-print, and forthcoming book, audio, and video titles. It includes tables of contents, full-text previews, and reviews, as well as awards, bestsellers, and author biography databases. The database is updated daily. Basic searches include author, title, keyword, or ISBN/UPC; searches may be limited by the status or format of the item of interest. Users may browse various indexes or general subject categories. Users may set up alerts to receive e-mail notices when new items that meet established search criteria are added to the database. This database replaces public access to Books in Print through FirstSearch.
CQ Global Researcher complements the Library’s existing subscription to CQ Researcher, but takes it a step further. CQ Global Researcher provides coverage of global affairs – current crises and events - on many different topics. Each topic is covered in a detailed report that includes overview, background, current situation, and future outlook sections. The report also includes pros and cons, a chronology of events, a bibliography, recommended readings (listed as The Next Step), contact information for organizations mentioned in the report, and footnotes. CQ Global Researcher also includes short features, which are "blurbs" on the topic; related maps and graphs; and Voices from Abroad, which are quotes from people or organizations. CQ Global Researcher is currently accessible through the CQ Researcher database. Eventually, CQ Global Researcher will have its own entry in the database list. Rod Library will notify the campus when this is the case.
