July 15, 2008Try It, You'll Like It! Course Reserves
Course reserves provides materials such as books, articles, sample tests, lecture notes, videotapes, DVD's and other items that UNI faculty wish their students to read or view. Thousands of items are placed on reserve every semester, throughout the semester.
UNI Faculty can request that the library place on electronic reserve chapters from books, articles, sample tests or papers, lecture notes, journal articles, and other items for their students to read or view. The Reserve Desk will place items on electronic reserve following the "fair use" provisions of Title 17, Section 107 of the Copyright Act. Rod Library reserves the right to have more restrictive guidelines than stated explicitly in the U.S. Code.
The Electronic Course Reserve service enhances the print course reserve service currently offered through the UNI Rod Library. Electronic Course Reserves allow UNI students access to scanned reserve materials through UNISTAR. Items can be viewed and printed by users, both on and off campus, 24 hours a day/7 days a week. What student wouldn't love that?
Submit your request by August 11 to have it available for the day of class at: http://www.uni.edu/library/reserverequest/.

July 9, 2008Sidewalk Work Beginning Friday
The sidewalk reconstruction project will begin July 11th and should be completed early in the fall semester, weather permitting that is. This project will be similar to last year's project in that they will remove the concrete from the line of bricks just slightly south of our entrance to an area around the reflecting pool in front of Maucker Union and replacing it with bricks.
Friday they will begin erecting fencing around the reconstruction area and then will begin work on Monday, again weather permitting.
Possibly beginning as early as Friday this week access to the library's entrance from the south will not be possible. All entrances to the Union will remain open however. When approaching from the south...
1. Enter the Union through the southwest door, which is close to Essentials, and exit through the Union's northwest door, which is across from our entrance.
or
2. Take the stairs beside the southwest door of the Union over the top of the Union and exit down the ramp across from the library's entrance.
or
3. Go around the library to the west and approach the entrance from the north.
Thanks for your patience! This walkway will be very attractive once all parts of the project are complete.

Wiley/Synergy Workarounds
A number of workarounds are being adopted by library users to deal with the problems linking to the Synergy content that was migrated to Wiley Interscience last weekend. Here are some things you can do to get to Synergy journal articles.
- If you have a DOI (digital object identifier) for the article in question, plug it into the DOI resolver at the following address:
If this does not work (and it won't for some titles), plug the DOI into the Wiley resolver by cutting and pasting the DOI onto the end of the following URL:
http://www3.interscience.wiley.com/resolve/doi?DOI=
- If you don't have a DOI, but do have a full citation or the article's author and title, plug them into the free DOI lookup at CrossRef. Then use the DOI to link to the resource.
If you have questions about either process, please Ask Us!
