Update on the Rod Library Recurring Materials Budget

As you may be aware, the Rod Library recurring materials budget has been protected, and will not be reduced as part of the University's budget reduction measures being implemented in FY 09-10. This is good news for the entire University community. However, the materials budget has been static for the last seven years. This situation already has led us to substantially reduce periodical and other serial subscriptions as well as one-time expenditures for monographs and other resources, such as cds and DVDs.

In preparation for the coming year, bibliographers in the Library’s Collection Management and Special Services Department have begun to consider how they will balance ongoing commitments with one-time purchases. We have been able to stretch the budget to some degree through the use of Student Computer Fee allocations, Fines money, and gift and grant funds administered through Foundation accounts. However, given ongoing inflation, a static budget means that we will continue to be short of funds. Thus, we are reviewing existing periodical, serial, and electronic resource commitments to identify cancellations to implement in FY 09-10. In this process, we will do our best to minimize the impact on study, teaching, and research across the disciplines.

Changes in FirstSearch Databases

Rod Library has made a change in the databases to which it provides access on a per-search basis via FirstSearch. For budgetary reasons it needs to reduce the ongoing purchase of searches for public use. Effective immediately, the Library will provide access through FirstSearch only to the GEOBASE database. It is dropping access to the following resources, which have not received high use: Alternative Press Index, Alternative Press Index Archive, ArticlesFirst, PapersFirst, and ProceedingsFirst. For assistance in identifying alternative databases, please inquire at the Reference Desk.

Look Up That Word With 1-Click

Ever come across a word you don’t know in an article, an email, or some other document? There is now a very easy way to get definitions using the public computers at Rod Library.

A program called 1-Click from Answers.com has been installed on public computers at the library. When you see a word or name you don’t know, hold down the Alt key (keep it pressed down) and then click on the word you want to look up. Release the Alt key, and a small window will pop up with the definition or other information about the word or phrase.

If 1-Click does not work with a particular document format, click in the URL box at the top of the browser and type answers.com, a forward slash, and the word, as in this example: answers.com/ubiquitous. Pressing the Enter key will bring up the same information from Answers.com

Alt-Click your way to a better vocabulary!

NewsBank's Access World News - Beta Test

In conjunction with Rod Library's current subscription to the America's Newspapers Collection available through NewsBank, we are participating in a beta test of the Access World News Research Collection. This test will run through the end of the semester.

There is a prominent link on the America's Newspapers site to Access World News. Click on the link to the Databases A - Z menu in the Journal and Magazine Articles (Panther Prowler) section on the Library's home page. Then choose America's Newspapers from the databases menu. Access World News provides access to local, in-state, national, and international news sources, including newspapers, broadcast transcripts, newswires, news blogs, news web-only content and video. Patrons may establish personal alerts.
