Rod Library's Redesigned Web Site Released
Monday, July 13th Rod Library released for public review the beta version of its redesigned Web site. The redesigned site will become Rod Library's primary Web site on August 3.
Your feedback is important to us. We want our site to be as usable and useful to UNI students and faculty as possible. If you would like to comment on the redesigned site or suggest an improvement go to http://wcm.lib.uni.edu/comment-rod-librarys-new-web-site.
New features of the site include:
* Improved navigation and design.
* A “Share” button has been placed on every page. This button will let our users bookmark and share our content with friends through social networking sites. With this button our users can easily send URLs of pages on our site to their Twitter, Delicious, Facebook, and other social networking accounts or send it to a friend.
* A new page has been created which gathers research information from across the site. "Research Help" is a good starting place for those just beginning their research or for those not sure where to begin.
* The tabbed search box on the homepage allows users to choose which types of resources they need to locate, articles, books and other materials, or course reserve information. From here users can do a quick search for journal articles and other materials.
* The News and Events page contains the most recent blog entries, an events calendar, special project information, and blog tag cloud.

New Account Option: My Reading History
Library staff members are often asked if we can give someone a list of the books they have checked out in the past. Our answer has always been, "No." The library takes seriously the privacy of your library records so we do not maintain a list of what you borrow after you return it. "My Reading History" is a new feature which allows you to track items you borrow. Some patrons have asked for this service as a means of recalling a book or author they liked or for keeping a list of what they have already read. Participation in the feature is entirely voluntary. You may start or stop using it, as well as delete any or all entries in "My Reading History”, at any time. If you choose to start using "My Reading History", you agree to allow our automated system to store this data.
To enable “My Reading History” go to My Library Account, choose My Reading History, and then choose “Start Saving My Reading History”. This begins the collection of titles you borrow from the Rod Library.

Construction Continues on 3rd Floor
Construction continues on the west side of the third floor. This week, possibly through Friday, contractors will be applying an epoxy or paint to the floor of the old Art and Music section, in the far northwest corner of that floor. The odor may be strong for some patrons. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.
Please see staff at the Circulation Desk to locate a spot in the library which may not be affected by the odor.

New Monthly Lists of New Library Items
A new version of the monthly lists of new titles at Rod Library was recently unveiled. At the site, you may view new titles organized several different ways:
- Broad subject categories, like Humanities or Science & Technology
- Narrower subject categories, like Music, Psychology, or Biology
- Special locations within the library, like the Youth Collection or the Browsing Room
- Special media, like CDs and DVDs
By default, you'll see the new items for the most recent calendar month, but you may also choose to view new titles from any of the previous six months.
While at the site, you may also subscribe to an email alert, which will remind you once a month when new information is added to the site.
If you have any questions, please contact Clint Wrede.

Please Pardon Our Mess and Noise
Construction on the third floor begins in earnest today as contractors begin working on the floor in the former Art and Music Collection. This space will become storage space for Special Collections and University Archives. For three or four days this week contractors will be using a machine to remove glue from the floor. This process will unfortunately be noisy. If you need assistance locating a quiet place to study please check with the friendly staff at the Circulation Desk on the second floor. Thank you for your patience as we try to improve our facility.

Two Career Collections?!
Since shortly after the Gilchrist fire in 2005, the Rod Library has been housing two Career Collections containing occupational information, employment forecasts, job hunting tips, and resume writing guides—the Rod Library Career Collection (on the north side of the Library) and the Career Services Library (that was temporarily housed near the Rod Library Career Collection). The Career Services Library has now returned home. The Career Services Library is now available in the entrance area of 102 Gilchrist and is overseen by Isabela Varela (3-6857). If you are interested in learning more about the Rod Library Career Collection, please ask at the main floor Reference Desk.

Warm Temperatures in the Library
We have had reports from students that it is too warm and stuffy in the building. As a matter of fact, library staff and faculty are also a bit too warm. The cause of this is a malfunctioning air conditioning system. The chiller, which cools the library during the warm months of the year, is not functioning correctly right now. We apologize for the uncomfortable temperatures. The building will become warmer if the outside temperatures become unseasonably warm.
The west side of the building does seem to be a bit cooler than the east side (the entrance is on the east side). If you become too warm you might consider finding a study spot on the west side of the building. Please see staff at the Circulation Desk if you need assistance locating a cooler spot to study.

Please Pardon Our Mess and Noise
Yesterday work began in the north central area of the fourth floor. Contractors will be removing a wall in order to prepare the area for the Art and Music Collection, which is currently on the third floor. There will be noise on this floor while the work is being done Monday-Friday from 7:30 a.m. to about 5:00 p.m.
We apologize for the inconvenience and ask for your patience as we improve this section of the building. If you need help finding a quiet place to study in the building during the day hours please stop at the Circulation Desk on the second floor. The staff there will be able to direct you to some nice quiet spots.

Empty Space on the 4th Floor?
Many of you might be wondering why we have moved all the furniture out of the study area just north of the elevators on the fourth floor. Roller skating? Indoor soccer? Not quite.
We moved the study carrels and lounge chairs to other parts of the fourth floor to prepare for additional renovations in the building. Beginning October 13th, renovations will begin on the office spaces formerly occupied by Compliance and Equity Management and currently occupied by Financial Accounting, and the empty study area. They'll be removing walls and preparing the area for the Art and Music Collection.
The Art and Music Collection, currently on the west side of the third floor, will move into this new area in a few short months. We are very excited about this move, as it will bring the collection closer to the print music and art collections (Library of Congress call numbers of M and N), which are housed on the fourth floor.

Water Back On in the Building
The title says it all! Water service has been restored to the east side of the building. (The entrance to the building is on the east side.) All drinking fountains in the building, all restrooms on the west side (facing the Campanile), and the fourth floor east restrooms are now open for business.
However, the first through third floor east men's and women's restrooms will still be closed due to renovations already in progress.
Thank you for your patience while the water was turned off.

No Water on East Side of Building
Water on the east side of the building will be turned off Tuesday September 9th, as the contractors begin demolition of the east side restrooms on the first through third floors. We are not certain how long the water will be off. Please use the restrooms and drinking fountains on the west side of the building until water is restored.
Thank you for your patience!

East Restrooms to be Closed for Renovations
The Library's first, second, and third floor East men's and women's restrooms will be closed for renovations beginning Tuesday, September 9th. The restrooms will receive updated plumbing and faucets and will be made wheelchair accessible. The renovations should be completed this semester.
The men's and women's restrooms on the fourth floor will remain open, as well as the west restrooms on the first through third floors.
The demolition work this week will be noisy. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. If you need assistance locating a quiet place to work in the building please see staff at the Reference Desk or the Circulation Desk.

Sidewalk Work Beginning Friday
The sidewalk reconstruction project will begin July 11th and should be completed early in the fall semester, weather permitting that is. This project will be similar to last year's project in that they will remove the concrete from the line of bricks just slightly south of our entrance to an area around the reflecting pool in front of Maucker Union and replacing it with bricks.
Friday they will begin erecting fencing around the reconstruction area and then will begin work on Monday, again weather permitting.
Possibly beginning as early as Friday this week access to the library's entrance from the south will not be possible. All entrances to the Union will remain open however. When approaching from the south...
1. Enter the Union through the southwest door, which is close to Essentials, and exit through the Union's northwest door, which is across from our entrance.
or
2. Take the stairs beside the southwest door of the Union over the top of the Union and exit down the ramp across from the library's entrance.
or
3. Go around the library to the west and approach the entrance from the north.
Thanks for your patience! This walkway will be very attractive once all parts of the project are complete.

Winner of the Website Survey Drawing
Congratulations to Chelsea Miller who received 100 pages of free photocopying from Rod Library!
Chelsea was one of many students who filled out the online survey in MyUNIverse about Rod Library's website in early February. In the survey we asked students to give us feedback on the library's website. Students who filled out the survey were entered into a drawing for the free photocopying. Chelsea's name was chosen at random by a computer from a group of 291 students who completed the survey.
Thanks, Chelsea, and thank you to all the students who gave us feedback on our website!
If you have comments, suggestions, or complaints, about Rod Library's website please send them to us. We want to hear from you!

Library Survey Report 2007
In February 2007 Rod Library invited people across the university community to participate in a user assessment survey (LibQUAL+). Many of you responded, and a library committee has been using the results to find out which resources and services are most important to you. We have set up a website to report the results to you. Currently, you can find information on the survey itself, and demographics of participants. We will be adding more information in the coming weeks.

Sidewalk Reconstruction Update
As you can see from our entrance, the sidewalk reconstruction project is moving right along. It will be a very attractive space once it is completed in a few weeks.
Beginning on June 21st, access to the Library's entrance from the south, which is what we currently have, will be closed. Instead they will open a path that leads to the north. After that date, pedestrians will need to turn LEFT after exiting the Library and walk around the north side of the building.
Thank you for your continued patience! Most all of this work should be completed before the end of June.

Orange Chairs and Tables for Sale
Need a chair or table for your home away from home?
The Library is selling 17 orange comfy chairs (with cushions) and 10 orange square and round tables that are being replaced by new chairs. These are located across from the MultiService Center, on the first floor, and would be ideal for apartments, dorm rooms or patios.
If orange doesn't suit you, you may paint them your favorite color. They paint up very well. The cushions may be removed when not in use so the furniture may work well on a patio.
If you are interested in purchasing one of these chairs or tables they are for sale for $5.00 each and are sold as is. Please see Susan Basye and the staff in the Dean's Office, room 211, with your payment of good check or cash and you can take one home today!

Library Survey Update
During spring semester 2006 many members of the campus community received an invitation to give input on library services, resources, and the library’s public spaces. Rod Library was participating in the LibQUAL+ survey, which is used by hundreds of academic libraries who want to understand and respond to library users’ opinions of service quality. The results are now in, and we are busy analyzing the comments and data. Watch the library website for more information about the results, to be posted in the coming months. We would like to thank everybody who filled out the survey. We expect to use the survey responses in developing enhancements of library services to meet your needs.

We apologize for the inconvenience.

Don't fence me in!
You may have noticed some fencing going up around the library the past few days. This is in preparation for some walkway reconstruction that will begin next week. When demolition of the current walkway is ready to begin, the gates on the fencing will close and visitors to the library will need to use the pedestrian access point at the south side of our entrance.
A map of the construction project may be found on the Facilities Services web site. This project will disrupt foot traffic in this part of campus for awhile but patrons will still be able to enter the library from our front doors.

Warm Temperature in the Library
The temperature of the building has been warm due to the change in seasons. The campus Physical Plant personnel must change each building's systems from heating to cooling every spring and then back to heating every fall. Changing from heating to cooling or vice versa is a complex process which involves more than simply flipping a switch. These changes cannot happen overnight. When we experience unseasonably warm temperatures in early spring, before we have been switched to cooling, our building becomes warmer. You will find a similar situation in buildings all across campus. We apologize, however there is little we can do about the situation. All buildings should be switched to cooling within the near future.

Quiet and Group Study Areas
While everyone was away on Spring Break, Rod Library staff were busy making changes to our study areas.
In response to student and faculty requests for more group study areas and dedicated quiet areas, we have created such spaces all around the building. We will be posting maps at our front entrance and you may also view them online. Pick up a brochure at a service desk to take with you too.
Here is a quick summary:
Group study areas have been arranged in locations on the first, second, and third floors. You will find the greatest change in furniture arrangement in the main study area on the west side of second floor.
Quiet areas include the entire fourth floor and the east lounge on the third floor.
We welcome your comments on these changes!

Library Service Quality Survey 2007
WHAT: The library will be conducting a survey called LibQUAL+ during February 2007. LibQUAL+ was developed by the Association of Research Libraries (ARL). It is a standardized survey that has been effective in helping libraries to measure the quality of their services through input from students, faculty, and staff.
WHY: Rod Library would like to evaluate and enhance the services it provides to the UNI community. Gathering feedback from students, faculty, and staff is an important part of this process and of planning for possible improvements.
WHO: A survey invitation will be sent to selected recipients (students, faculty, and staff). You may be one of them.
WHEN: The invitation will be emailed on February 5, and the survey will be available for three weeks, until February 26.
WHERE: Answer the survey from your desktop via the Web; the email invitation will direct you to the web-based survey.
HOW LONG: The survey consists of 27 core questions and 8 other questions. It should take only 10-15 minutes to complete the survey.
Summary survey results with be shared with the University community later in the spring semester.

Art & Music Collection Moving to Fourth Floor
In order to provide the best possible library service to the UNI community, certain library collections will be moving to new locations within Rod Library. Sometime in the near future, the Art & Music Collection will begin a move of its materials and services from its current location on the 3rd floor to a new location on the 4th floor of the library. After the A&M Collection has been moved out of its current location, Special Collections and University Archives will expand into much of the space vacated by Art & Music.
Music and art materials that have been housed in the Glass Case Collection in A&M will be moved permanently to shelving in Special Collections and University Archives. Current periodicals for art and music will be moved from their current location in A&M and will be incorporated into the Current Periodicals Collection on the 1st floor of the library. Other A&M materials, such as the art slide collection, reference books, sound recordings, and videos will be moved to the 4th floor as the project progresses. It is anticipated that temporary listening and viewing facilities will be made available on the 4th floor. The physical arrangement of A&M materials on the 4th floor will be temporary until such time as permanent enlargements and improvements can be made to the space after the library acquires 4th floor office space currently being occupied by displaced Gilchrist employees.
The members of the A&M Collection staff will relocate their work spaces to the 4th floor as well and will strive to make the transition from the 3rd floor to the 4th floor as convenient as possible for all library patrons.
