EndNote Web

Rod Library recently subscribed to a package of databases called Web of Knowledge. One feature of this package is called EndNote Web.

EndNote Web is a tool that can be used to collect, organize, and format up to 10,000 references in your own passworded account. The references can be arranged by groups that correspond to your research interests. References can be directly exported from some databases into your EndNote Web account. They also can be added manually. In some cases, references can be saved from a database to your desktop computer and then imported into EndNote Web. EBSCO's Business Source Elite and EconLIT, and Web of Knowledge, are examples of databases that provide an easy way to export references directly from a search into your EndNote Web account.

EndNote Web references can be formatted in any of several dozen styles such as APA, Chicago, MLA, and Turabian.

Other features include creating a group of people with whom to share references, "Cite While You Write" in Microsoft Word, and transfer of references between EndNote Web and EndNote desktop.

To get started, log on to Web of Knowledge. Then click the My EndNote Web link in the upper section of the screen to go to a page to register and create your personal account.

This page from the Thomson Reuters includes EndNote Web quick reference cards and recorded training sessions.

Research Consultations

Having trouble finding appropriate sources for your assignments? Or just want to speed up the research process for an upcoming paper?

Individual students and groups can request extensive assistance with a research project by scheduling a consultation with a librarian. A research consultation usually lasts 45 - 60 minutes. The librarian will suggest search terms, research tools, and strategies oriented toward a specific topic being studied by an individual or group.

Fill out the form at http://www.uni.edu/library/researchconsultation/ to request an appointment (48 hours in advance).

More immediate assistance can be obtained by contacting the Rod Library reference desk via IM, phone, email, or in person: http://www.library.uni.edu/ris/ask.shtml

Students can also get help this semester from reference librarians Stan Lyle or Tom Kessler in the Curris Business Building student lounge, Mondays from 12 noon to 2 pm and Thursdays from 10 am to 12 noon. CBA students also can contact Stan Lyle directly to schedule a research consultation (stanley.lyle@uni.edu).

Work Space and Equipment for Team Projects

Rod Library has 20 group study rooms that will be helpful for students working on team projects. Six of the 20 have desktop computers with Internet access and programs such as Microsoft Word and PowerPoint.

Rod Library also has several laptop computers available for student checkout at the MultiService Center on the first floor of the Rod Library. The laptops can be checked out for three hours of use in the building. They have wireless network access and standard Microsoft programs.

A student's own laptop can be used to access the UNI network in the Rod Library building, via wireless or hard wired connection, after registering at the ITS Consulting Center in the ITTC. See this page for more details.

Rod Library also is setting up computers with two monitors for group work. The first two to be set up are located on the main floor of the library, south of the reference collection, and on the west side.

Finally, group study areas have been arranged in locations on the first, second, and third floors. You will find the greatest change in furniture arrangement in the main study area on the west side of second floor.

Article Locator

If you already have the citation to a journal article and are wondering if it is online, try Article Locator, listed on the Rod Library home page under Journal and Magazine Articles. Enter the journal title, such as Journal of Marketing, and other details about the article, such as date of publication, volume number, and starting page number.

Clicking the Go button will bring up a window that indicates whether Rod Library has rights to an online version of the article or journal. "Get Electronic Copy" links on this window sometimes lead directly to the article; in other cases, you may have to do a little hunting around for the right year or volume and page number. If Rod Library does not have an electronic version, try the link for looking up the journal title in the library catalog, UNISTAR. The article may be available in print at the Rod Library building.

Work Areas and laptops for team projects

As a followup to my meeting with Professor Power's Business Policy class, I'd like to make sure you know about rooms available for students working on team projects. There are 20 such rooms at Rod Library; six rooms have networked desktop computers with software such as Microsoft Word and PowerPoint. They have room for up to six students, with table, chairs, and chalkboard. Go to the Circulation Desk if you would like to "check out" a room.

Rod Library also checks out networked laptop computers at the Multiservice Center (bottom floor) for use in the library building. These laptops have Microsoft software such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

A student's own laptop can be used to access the UNI network in the Rod Library building, via wireless or hard wired connection, after registering at the ITS Consulting Center in the ITTC. See this page for more details.

About Ask Me Now and Rod Library Reference Services

The Rod Library BizBlog includes a meebo me widget called Ask Me Now; this is a small IM window on the right side of the screen. The widget will say whether I am available in my office (online) or not available (offline). If I am available, type your question or comment in the widget and hit enter to IM. If I'm not available, you can leave a message that I will read at a later time. Include your email or phone if you want me to get back to you. (If you do not see the widget on your screen, you may wish to download the flash player at no charge.)

You may prefer to IM via your AOL Instant Messenger,Yahoo! Messenger, or MSN accounts. I will also monitor these services from my office. My screen name for these services is: unilibbizfor AIM and and Yahoo!, unilibbiz@hotmail.com for MSN. Feel free to add this screen name to your buddy or contact list to see if I am online.

This IM service is a component of Rod Library reference services. You also may seek reference and research assistance via a Rod Library online chat form, email, over the phone (319-273-2843), or in person at the Rod Library reference desk.
