Farming in Iowa

This was one of a kind experience I had in Iowa after being here for 2 years. Farming is completely different in India compared to Iowa. There an average farmer has probably 10 to 20 acres or less, here it s from 100 to 400 acres. This farm I went to was my friend Joe’s, it is probably around 300 acres and yeah that’s big numbers for a guy like me.

So to have a complete me and my friends Rak and Agata decided to be farmers for a day, Rak actually woke up at 6:00 am to experience an average farmer’s work schedule (That’s because Rak has never seen sun rise in Iowa). Once we got there we got into overalls and work boots, which I think is funny because we have never worn an overall nor working boots. Then we were assigned the job of cleaning the maternity pit, this is shed where the calves are born. So yeah I was trying to get the pit cleaned with Rak and Joe while Agata was admiring the beautiful day. After a while we dug into the pit I got a strong smell ammonia, Oh yeah I mean ammonia from all the waste left behind and soaked for days. I couldn’t stay in the shed for long; I had to get some fresh air. I decided to stay away and watch which at that time was the best thing to do. Then yeah we did the best job everyone likes in the farming world – Hauling manure. We did that and Joe cleaned up after we did that, yeah he loves doing this every weekend. At this point all I could smell was “manure” I mean cow dung, the last time I came across that smell was in India at my grand parent’s farm. I thought we are not going to get any more hard work but Joe and his Doug had a surprise waiting for us. Yeah we went to the barn and we had transfer the bales from the back of a tractor to the barn. After all the hard work we decided to lay down on the ground and rest, yeah we were tired. I guess that’s an average farming experience that everyone should have because it’s worth it.
